Camp Civitan Ability Camp: Building Bonds, Changing Lives
When it comes to making a difference, sometimes all it takes is an open heart, a weekend of hard work, and a desire to uplift others. At Camp Civitan Ability Camp, these elements come together to create an extraordinary experience—one that transforms lives and connects communities.
For us at Pi Kappa Phi’s Theta Upsilon Chapter at Northern Arizona University (NAU), Camp Civitan isn’t just a philanthropy event; it’s a defining opportunity to grow, serve, and make a lasting impact. Whether it’s building ramps for accessibility or bringing smiles to the faces of campers, this camp exemplifies what it means to put Ability over Disability. So much so they have asked our chapter to be the ability partner of our chapter. Meaning each philanthropy event we do up to 25% goes to Camp Civitan!
Why Camp Civitan Matters
What makes Camp Civitan so special? It’s about more than just giving back; it’s about creating a space where people with disabilities can thrive.
Camp Civitan, located in Williams, Arizona, has been a pillar of our community for over 50 years, offering inclusive, enriching programs for individuals with developmental disabilities. For campers, this is a place where they can build friendships, develop new skills, and, most importantly, experience pure joy.
For our chapter, volunteering at Camp Civitan is a privilege. Beyond the manual tasks like sanding picnic tables or landscaping the grounds, it’s about the meaningful human connections we form. Whether it’s playing games with campers or sharing a laugh, the memories we create here are invaluable.

The History and Evolution of Camp Civitan
Camp Civitan was founded in 1969 with a vision to empower individuals with disabilities and enrich their lives. What started as a small initiative has grown into a thriving program that serves hundreds annually.
Over the years, Camp Civitan has not only expanded its facilities but has also amplified its mission. Today, it’s a place equipped with accessible activities and life-enhancing programs. From adaptive playgrounds to art therapy studios, every corner of the camp is a testament to its commitment to inclusion.
Working alongside The Ability Experience—a philanthropic initiative of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity—our NAU chapter has been part of this incredible growth. Programs like Ability Camps provide the manpower and resources to reinforce these spaces, ensuring they continue to be centers of transformation and belonging.

The Positive Outcomes
These activities do more than entertain. They foster self-esteem, teamwork, and independence for every participant. Camp Civitan is more than just a temporary retreat; it’s a catalyst for lifelong development, empowering individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential.
How Fraternal Organizations Make a Difference
Camp Civitan exemplifies the power of community service—and it wouldn’t be what it is today without the support of organizations like Pi Kappa Phi.
Our Theta Upsilon Chapter at NAU, alongside other Pi Kappa Phi chapters across the country, steps in to make a real difference. Partnering with The Ability Experience, we provide funds, resources, and volunteer hours to enhance facilities and programs for people with disabilities.
Last October, for instance, Pi Kappa Phi brothers from multiple chapters came together at Camp Civitan. It wasn’t just about repainting picnic tables or prepping the grounds for winter—it was about creating an inclusive space where campers feel celebrated for who they are.
And while building these spaces is important, engaging directly with campers holds even greater value. From shared conversations to cheering each other on during activities, the bonds we build serve as powerful reminders of why we fundraise and give back in the first place.
Our commitment to service helps foster a more inclusive world. By valuing every individual—no matter their abilities—we lead by example and encourage others to do the same.
